Genesis Automotive and RV Repair in Tacoma, WA, explains what oxygen sensors do and why they fail.

An oxygen sensor is one of those parts drivers never see, never touch, and rarely think about until the check engine light comes on. By then, the car may still feel fine, which makes the problem seem smaller than it is. The truth is, this sensor has a bigger influence on engine performance than most people realize.

If the engine computer is using bad oxygen sensor data, it starts making fuel decisions based on incorrect information. That affects far more than one warning light.

How Oxygen Sensors Help The Engine Run Correctly

The oxygen sensor measures the amount of oxygen left in the exhaust after combustion. From there, the engine computer determines whether the air-fuel mixture is too rich, too lean, or close to ideal. It keeps adjusting that mixture as the car runs, which helps the engine stay cleaner, more efficient, and more responsive.

That constant feedback is a major factor in how modern vehicles control emissions and fuel use. Without it, the engine is no longer making precise corrections in real time.

Why Most Vehicles Have More Than One

Many drivers think there is just one oxygen sensor somewhere in the exhaust. In reality, most modern vehicles use more than one. There is generally an upstream sensor that helps control the fuel mixture and a downstream sensor that helps monitor catalytic converter performance.

Those sensors do different jobs, so their failure patterns can look different, too. One may affect how the engine runs. The other may trigger a warning light without significantly affecting drivability at first. Either way, both are part of the same system and worth taking seriously.

           What Makes Oxygen Sensors Fail

Oxygen sensors live in a brutal environment. They deal with heat, exhaust gases, contamination, and thousands of heating and cooling cycles over their lifespan. With enough time, they simply slow down, lose accuracy, or stop responding the way the engine computer expects.

Contamination makes the problem worse. Oil burning, coolant leaks, poor fuel quality, and carbon buildup can shorten sensor life and cause bad readings sooner than expected. A sensor does not have to fail all at once to start creating trouble. A slow sensor is still a problem.

           What Drivers Usually Notice First

In many cases, the check engine light is the first clue. Sometimes the vehicle still drives well enough that the owner assumes the issue can wait. In other cases, the car starts showing smaller changes before the light appears.

You might notice lower fuel economy, a rougher idle, weaker throttle response, or hesitation that wasn't there before. The engine can still run, but it no longer feels as clean or efficient as it should. That shift is easy to dismiss for a while, especially if it builds gradually.

Why A Bad Oxygen Sensor Causes Bigger Problems

Once the sensor starts feeding bad data to the computer, the fuel control drifts away from its intended position. The engine may run too rich (too much fuel) or too lean (not enough). Either one creates side effects, though rich operation tends to be the more common complaint.

That extra fuel does not just disappear. It puts more stress on the catalytic converter, increases emissions, and lowers fuel economy. A repair that starts with one sensor can become much more expensive if the exhaust system keeps absorbing the consequences.

Why Diagnostics Are So Important Here

An oxygen sensor code does not always mean the sensor itself is the only issue.

A vacuum leak, fuel delivery problem, exhaust leak, or ignition issue can affect sensor readings and trigger related faults

. That is where proper computer diagnostics become so important.

A good inspection should confirm whether the sensor has failed, whether the wiring is compromised, or whether another problem is creating bad data through the sensor circuit. Replacing parts based on a guess is one of the easiest ways to spend money and still keep the warning light.

Why It Pays To Fix The Problem Early

Drivers get into trouble when they treat an oxygen sensor fault like a minor emissions issue that can sit for months. The car may still run, but the system is no longer working cleanly. Fuel use climbs, the converter works harder, and performance starts slipping in ways the driver slowly adapts to.

This is one of those repairs that stays simpler when handled early.

Regular maintenance helps here because small drivability changes and early warning lights

get checked before the exhaust system starts paying for them, too.

7 Safety Checks To Do Before Towing A Horse Trailer

Genesis Automotive and RV Repair in Tacoma, WA, shares safety checks to do before towing a horse trailer to help prevent roadside trouble.

Towing a horse trailer is different from towing a utility trailer. The load is heavier, it moves, and you do not get a second chance if something goes wrong at speed. Most towing problems come from basic things that were skipped, not from some mystery failure. A few minutes of checking the right items before you roll out can prevent a scary situation on the highway.

This is also one of those times where regular maintenance pays off. A truck with worn brakes, tired tires, or

           weak cooling

can feel fine unloaded, then struggle hard once you add trailer weight.

           Hitch, Ball, And Coupler Fit

Start by confirming the ball size matches the coupler, and the coupler is fully seated and latched. A loose coupler can jump or rattle and can come off the ball if it is not locked properly. Check the hitch pin, the receiver, and any anti-rattle hardware so the connection is solid.

Also, make sure the hitch is rated for the trailer and the load. If you are using a weight-distribution setup, confirm the bars and brackets are installed correctly and not binding.

           Safety Chains And Breakaway Cable

Chains should cross under the coupler so they can help cradle the tongue if the trailer disconnects. They should be long enough for turning but not dragging. If the hooks have damaged latches, replace them.

The breakaway cable should be clipped to the tow vehicle separately from the chains. It should be routed so it can pull cleanly if needed, without being wrapped around the hitch. This is a small detail that is very important, because the breakaway system is what applies trailer brakes if the trailer ever separates.

Trailer Brakes And Brake Controller Setup

Trailer brakes need to be working correctly before you add a live load. Test the brake controller operation at low speed in a safe area. You should feel the trailer braking smoothly, not grabbing and not doing nothing.

Here are quick signs the brake setup needs attention:

The trailer brakes feel weak, even with the controller gain increased

Brakes grab suddenly instead of applying smoothly

You smell hot brakes after a short, easy drive

The controller shows a wiring or connection fault

If anything feels off, fix it before you hit the highway. A horse trailer pushing the tow vehicle is not a situation you want.

           Tires, Pressure, And Load Ratings

Tire pressure is one of the biggest towing safety factors. Underinflated tires build heat, and heat is what causes blowouts. Check tire pressure on the tow vehicle and the trailer when cold. Also, check tread depth and sidewall condition. Trailer tires age out even when the tread looks decent.

Look for cracking near the sidewalls, bulges, and uneven wear. Confirm the tires are load-rated for the weight you are carrying. If the trailer tires are old, do not gamble with them, because a blowout on a horse trailer can get ugly fast.

           Lights, Signals, And Wiring Connection

Verify brake lights, turn signals, and running lights on the trailer. Do not assume they work because they worked last time. Wiring connectors get corrosion and loose pins, and a bad ground can make lights act weird.

If you see flickering lights or inconsistent signals, address it now. It is not just about avoiding a ticket. It is about other drivers understanding what you are doing when you change lanes or slow down.

Load Balance, Door Latches, And Interior Safety

A balanced load helps stability. Make sure the horse is loaded according to the trailer design and the weight distribution is not tail-heavy. Confirm all doors, ramps, and divider latches are secured. If a latch is questionable, replace it. You do not want to discover a problem mid-trip.

Before you leave, do a quick walk-through inside the trailer. Look for loose items, sharp edges, or anything that could shift during braking. A small interior issue can become a big stressor once the trailer starts moving.

Tow Vehicle Cooling, Fluids, And Braking Condition

Towing increases heat in the drivetrain and cooling system. Check the engine oil level, coolant level, and transmission condition if your vehicle has a serviceable setup. Confirm the tow vehicle brakes feel solid and the pedal is consistent. If the brakes are already near the limit unloaded, towing will expose it quickly.

This is also a good moment for an inspection if the vehicle has not been serviced recently. Regular maintenance keeps belts, hoses, and cooling components ready for extra load. If the temperature gauge climbs during towing, do not push it. Heat is what turns a manageable trip into a breakdown on the shoulder.

Our RV Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist: Tires, Brakes, And Fluids

Genesis Automotive and RV Repair in Tacoma, WA, shares an RV pre-trip inspection checklist covering tires, brakes, and fluid checks to help you avoid roadside surprises.

RV trips are supposed to feel relaxing, but the lead-up can get stressful fast. An RV is basically a small house riding on a heavy vehicle platform, and that means small issues can become big problems once you are hours from home. A pre-trip inspection is how you keep “minor” from turning into “roadside.”

This checklist focuses on the three areas that most often decide whether an RV trip stays smooth: tires, brakes, and fluids.

Use it before every longer drive, and especially before towing or heading into heat, hills, or long highway stretches.

Tires: The Fastest Way To Ruin A Trip

Tires are the most common trip-ender on RVs. They carry a lot of weight, they sit for long periods, and they age even when the tread looks good. Start with pressure, and check it when the tires are cold. Use the pressure spec for your RV and tire load rating, not a generic number.

Then inspect the condition closely. Look at sidewalls, tread, and the areas where the tire meets the wheel. RV tires can look fine from five feet away and still be one pothole away from a blowout.

Check cold tire pressure on every tire, including the spare.

Look for sidewall cracking, bulges, or weather-checking.

Inspect tread for uneven wear, cupping, or exposed cords.

Confirm tread depth is safe for rain, not just dry roads.

Check valve stems for cracking and caps for a tight fit.

Verify lug nuts are present and look for rust trails that hint at looseness.

If your RV has been sitting, also check for flat-spot vibration on the first drive. That can be normal at first, but it should improve as the tires warm up.

Brakes: What To Check Before You Roll

Brakes on an RV have a harder job than most drivers realize. You are stopping more weight, often with more wind resistance and more heat buildup on long grades. Start by checking the feel at low speed in a safe area. The pedal should feel firm and consistent, and the RV should stop straight without pulling.

Listen for noises early. Squeals, grinding, or a metallic scrape are worth addressing before you get on the highway. You also want to confirm the parking brake function, because a weak parking brake can create a nasty surprise on a slope.

Test brake pedal feel at low speed, and confirm it does not sink slowly

            .

Listen for squeal, grinding, or a scrape that repeats every stop.

Check that braking is straight with no pulling to one side.

Confirm the parking brake holds the RV on a mild incline.

Look through the wheels if possible to estimate pad thickness.

Check for brake fluid leaks around wheels and under the chassis.

If your RV has a trailer brake controller, verify it is working and set correctly. A controller that is too low can overwork the RV brakes, and too high can cause grabbing.

Fluids: A Pre-Trip Routine That Prevents Overheating

Fluids are what keep the drivetrain alive under load. Heat is the enemy on RV trips, especially in traffic and on hills, and fluids are your buffer. Check the engine oil level first, then the coolant level once the engine is cool. If you are topping off fluids frequently, treat that as a sign to schedule service before the trip.

Transmission fluid matters too, especially if you tow. Low or degraded fluid can lead to slipping, overheating, or harsh shifting, and those issues tend to appear on long drives. Power steering and brake fluid are also worth checking because a small leak can become a real safety problem.

Check engine oil level and look for a sudden drop since the last trip

Check coolant level when cool, and inspect hoses for swelling or crusty residue.

Check transmission fluid condition if accessible, and note burnt smell or discoloration.

Confirm brake fluid is at the correct level and does not look very dark.

If your RV has a generator, check its oil level too. It is easy to forget until you need it.

Underbody And Walkaround: The Quick Catch-All That Helps

Even though this checklist focuses on tires, brakes, and fluids, a fast walkaround prevents silly problems. Look for fresh wet spots under the RV. Check for hanging shields, loose steps, or anything dragging. If you tow, inspect the hitch area and safety chains.

This is also the time to check the lights. Brake lights, running lights, and turn signals matter more than you think when you are driving a large vehicle. If something is dim or flickering, handle it now while parts are easy to find.

Day-Of Departure: A Short Test Drive Plan

Before you hit the highway, take a short loop near home. Listen for new noises and feel for vibration that was not there on the last drive. Pay attention to braking feel and whether the RV tracks straight.

If you smell burning rubber, hear loud squealing, or see the temperature climbing, turn back. It is much easier to fix an issue in your driveway than on the shoulder of the road.

Even five minutes of test-driving can reveal what a checklist cannot.

How to Prepare Your RV for Winter Storage

Genesis Automotive and RV Repair in Tacoma, WA, explains how to prepare an RV for winter storage so it is protected until next season.

Parking the RV for the winter is more than turning off the key and walking away. Cold nights, moisture, and months of sitting can be hard on plumbing, batteries, tires, and seals. A little prep now can prevent cracked lines, dead batteries, musty smells, and surprise repairs when you are ready for your first spring trip.

Why Taking Winter Storage Seriously Pays Off Later

An RV is basically a house and a vehicle combined, which means it has more systems that can suffer in winter than a regular car. Water left in the plumbing can freeze and split fittings. Batteries slowly discharge and form sulfate. Moist coastal air can sneak inside and leave you with mildew and odors.

Most of the “spring surprise” repairs we see on RVs started as small storage mistakes. Spending a little time to drain, clean, and protect the RV before it sits can save quite a bit of money and hassle when camping season comes back around.

Plan Where and How Long the RV Will Sit

Before you grab any tools, decide where the RV will live over the winter and for how many months. A covered spot with decent airflow is ideal, but many owners use a driveway or side yard, and that is fine if you plan for it. Try to choose a surface that drains well so the RV is not sitting in standing water after heavy rain.

If possible, park on level ground, set the parking brake, and use quality wheel chocks. Avoid parking under trees that constantly drop sap, needles, or branches. Making a simple written checklist with your planned storage length helps you remember items like fuel stabilizer, battery care, and how often you want to check on the RV while it is parked.

Protect Fluids, Cooling System, and Fuel

Your RV’s engine and generator still need basic protection while the rig is sitting. An oil change just before storage removes acidic, dirty oil that would otherwise sit on bearing surfaces all winter. That fresh oil gives you a cleaner start in the spring.

Fuel can go stale over several months. For gasoline engines, a good fuel stabilizer in a nearly full tank helps reduce condensation and varnish. Running the engine and generator briefly after adding it helps circulate treated fuel through the system. Coolant should be in good condition and at the proper strength so any cold snaps do not stress the cooling system. If it has been many years since a coolant service, this is a smart time to catch up.

Safeguard Plumbing from Freezing and Odors

The plumbing system is one of the biggest concerns in winter storage

. Any water left in lines, pumps, or fixtures can freeze and crack parts, even in areas that do not see deep freezes very often. At a minimum, fresh and waste tanks should be drained and faucets opened to relieve pressure.

Many owners go a step further and winterize with RV-safe antifreeze. A typical approach includes:

Draining the fresh water tank and water heater and bypassing the heater if possible

Opening low-point drains and letting lines empty completely

Using the RV’s pump to pull non-toxic RV antifreeze through faucets, shower, toilet, and outside shower

Pouring a bit of antifreeze into the sink and shower traps to keep them from drying out

Cleaning and emptying the fridge, freezer, and pantry, then propping doors slightly open, helps prevent mold and stale odors. A quick wipe-down and a couple of moisture-absorbing products inside the cabin can make a big difference by spring.

           Tires, Batteries, and Rodent Prevention

Tires can develop flat spots and dry rot if they sit in one position for months. Inflating them to the correct pressure, parking on boards or pads instead of bare ground, and moving the RV a short distance once in a while can all help. Covering the tires protects them from UV that dries the rubber.

Batteries slowly discharge over time, especially in cold or damp weather. Depending on your setup, you can disconnect them, use a quality maintainer, or follow the manufacturer’s storage recommendations. We suggest labeling cables clearly so it is easy to reconnect everything correctly in the spring.

Rodents see stored RVs as warm, sheltered spaces. Simple steps like sealing food, vacuuming crumbs, closing gaps where wires enter, and using traps or deterrents in storage areas reduce the odds of chewed wiring and nesting in ductwork.

After Storage: Checks Before Your First Trip

When winter is over, do not just fire up the RV and head straight for the highway. A quick spring checklist helps you spot issues before they ruin a trip. Walk around the RV and look for any signs of moisture intrusion, roof damage, or chewed wiring. Check tire pressures, fluid levels, and visible hoses and belts under the hood.

Once you reconnect the batteries and remove any covers, start the engine and let it idle until it reaches normal temperature while you listen for odd noises. Test lights, signals, slide-outs, furnace, water pump, and appliances before you load gear. If anything feels off, it is easier to address it in the driveway than at the campground.

10 Important Tasks to Do When Winterizing Your RV

Genesis Automotive and RV Repair in Tacoma, WA, walks you through the most important winterizing tasks for RVs before freezing weather hits.

Tacoma winters are cool and damp, which is tough on plumbing, batteries, roofs, and fabrics. Winterizing your RV is more than pouring pink fluid down a drain. Done right, it prevents cracked fittings, mold, dead batteries, and springtime repair bills. Use these ten tasks as a simple, reliable plan.

           1. Drain Fresh Water and Bypass the Water Heater

Start by shutting off the water heater and letting it cool. Open the drain plug or anode rod and let it empty fully. Engage the bypass valves so you do not waste gallons of antifreeze filling the tank. This step keeps the heater safe and saves money on fluid.

           2. Empty Holding Tanks and Rinse the System

Dump black and gray tanks at an approved station, then flush them clean. Add a small amount of RV safe tank treatment to prevent odors over the winter. Leaving waste in tanks is hard on seals and creates stubborn smells when you reopen in spring.

           3. Blow Out Lines, Then Add RV Antifreeze

Use regulated compressed air at about 30 to 40 psi to blow water from the lines, opening each faucet and low point drain in turn. After the air passes, pump RV-rated, non-toxic antifreeze through the plumbing until pink appears at each fixture, including outside showers and toilet valves. Pour a cup into every P-trap so the traps do not crack.

           4. Protect Valves, Seals, and the Water Pump

Cycle the toilet and tank valves with a little antifreeze so seals stay lubricated. Draw a bit of antifreeze through the water pump to protect the impeller and housing. If your rig has a filter canister, remove the cartridge and leave the bowl empty to avoid a messy surprise later.

           5. Battery Care That Prevents Spring Issues

Batteries prefer full charge and stable temperature. Clean terminals, check water levels on serviceable batteries, and connect a quality maintainer.

If the RV will sit outside without power, remove the batteries and store them in a cool, dry space on a maintainer

. A rested, charged battery lives longer and saves headaches on the first trip back.

           6. Engine, Generator, and Fuel System (Motorhomes and Toy Haulers)

Change engine oil before storage so acids do not sit on bearings. Top off fuel and add stabilizer, then run the engine and generator long enough to pull treated fuel through. Check coolant strength and date, and service the air filter if it is due. For generators, change oil and verify output under load so it is ready when you need it.

           7. Tires, Brakes, and Storage Stance

Set tire pressures to the correct spec for storage and block the RV securely

. If possible, move the rig a few inches monthly to avoid flat spotting, or use tire cradles. For long-term storage, consider using jack stands rated for the vehicle's weight to reduce the load on suspension components. Release the parking brake on air brake systems only if the wheels are properly chocked.

           8. Roof, Seals, and Moisture Defense

Inspect the roof for cracks, soft spots, and lifting sealant around vents, skylights, and antennas. Reseal as needed with the correct RV sealant. Tacoma’s humidity demands airflow, so use vent covers to allow ventilation without inviting rain. Place desiccant tubs inside and consider a small dehumidifier on a timer if the RV has shore power.

           9. Interior Cleanout and Pest Prevention

Empty all food, wipe cabinets, and vacuum soft surfaces so crumbs do not attract rodents. Prop open closet and bath doors for airflow, and crack the refrigerator doors after cleaning so mildew does not form. Seal entry points under the chassis and around plumbing with appropriate mesh or foam, and set traps at known access spots.

           10. Propane, Appliances, Slides, and Awnings

Turn off the propane at the tank and cap open lines if any appliances are disconnected. Lightly oil appliance hinges and latches. Retract slides and awnings only after they are dry and clean to avoid trapped moisture. If your fridge has a winter setting, follow the manual; otherwise, leave it off with doors propped.

What Every RV Owner Should Know About Preventative Maintenance

Genesis Automotive and RV Repair in Tacoma, WA, explains the key preventive maintenance steps every RV owner should follow to avoid costly breakdowns.

RVs pack a rolling home and a vehicle into one machine, which means twice the comfort and about twice the upkeep. Preventive maintenance does not have to be complicated. A steady routine keeps breakdowns away from your road trips and helps the coach feel solid on rough pavement.

Here is a clear checklist of what matters, why it matters, and how often you should plan it.

           Build a Simple Maintenance Rhythm

The best plan is the one you will follow. Set two anchors on your calendar: a spring shakedown before your first trip, and a fall wrap-up before storage or rainy season. Motorhomes add mileage-based services, while towables focus on chassis and coach checks. Keep a small log in the glove box for dates, mileage, tire ages, battery replacements, and last seal inspections. That record turns guesswork into confidence.

Tires, Wheels, and Bearings Deserve Priority

RVs are heavy, and tires age from time as much as miles. Check date codes and replace around the six to seven year mark, even if the tread looks good. Set pressures to the load chart, not a guess, and confirm with a quality gauge before every travel day. For trailers, plan a bearing inspection and repack about every 12 months or 12,000 miles, and adjust electric brakes so they grab smoothly without chatter. On motorhomes, an annual alignment protects tires from shoulder wear and keeps the coach steady in crosswinds.

Roof, Seams, and Exterior Seals Keep Water Out

Water is the quiet enemy of RVs. Walk the roof with a careful foot, look for cracks in lap sealant around vents, antennas, and skylights, and touch up with the correct sealant for your roof type. Check sidewall seams, window frames, and marker lights for gaps. Inspect the awning fabric for frayed edges and the roller for smooth operation. Finding a small split now saves cabinets, subfloor, and upholstery from hidden damage later.

House Batteries and Electrical Systems Need Regular Checks

House batteries support lights, pumps, and appliances. Verify state of charge, clean terminals, and confirm your converter or inverter-charger is set to the correct battery type. Flooded batteries need distilled water at the right level. AGM and lithium have different charging profiles, so menu settings matter. Test the GFCI outlets, inspect the shore power cord for heat marks, and open the transfer switch cover to check for loose lugs. A quick look at the 7-pin trailer connector or motorhome umbilical prevents lighting issues on the road.

Fluids, Filters, and Generator Care Keep You Moving

Motorhomes rely on chassis maintenance just like any truck

. Follow intervals for engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid, and axle lube. Replace air and fuel filters on time so long grades do not feel like a struggle. Generators last when they are exercised. Run the generator under a real load for about 30 minutes each month to keep the windings dry, the fuel fresh in the carb or injectors, and the seals healthy. If the generator stumbles under the A/C load, a simple service often restores smooth output.

Brakes, Suspension, and Steering Affect Safety and Comfort

Heavier rigs amplify small faults. Listen for clunks over driveway aprons and watch for extra bounce after speed bumps. Replace worn bushings, check shock performance, and inspect leaf spring hangers or airbags for cracks and leaks. On trailers, verify equalizer wear and shackle bolts. Motorhomes with hydraulic brakes should have the fluid tested for moisture and the pads measured at all corners. Shorter stopping distances and less sway make long days easier.

Water Systems, Propane, and Safety Gear Need Attention

Sanitation and hot water feel like home when they work. Flush the freshwater tank, sanitize lines, and inspect the anode rod in the water heater if equipped. Replace brittle hoses and tighten clamps at the pump. Have the propane system leak-checked, confirm regulator age, and test the water heater and furnace for proper ignition. Press the test buttons on smoke, carbon monoxide, and LP detectors, and check the fire extinguisher gauge. These are small minutes that pay off during a busy camping weekend.

Walk around the coach and look for new streaks or soft spots near seams.

Set tire pressures cold and scan tread for unusual wear.

These light touches keep surprises off your travel calendar.

You likely are wondering what services you need. Let’s start with oil changes. Oil changes are fundamental to maintaining your vehicle’s performance and its lifespan. This seemingly simple task is critical in preserving engine health by reducing friction and preventing overheating. It’s one of the number one maintenance tasks we recommend. Another key aspect of preventative maintenance is brake inspection and servicing. Your brakes are perhaps the most important safety feature on any vehicle. Therefore, consistent check-ups are paramount to catching issues early. Tire care is equally crucial yet often overlooked until an issue arises. Proper tire inflation improves gas mileage and ensures better handling and safety during drives through Tacoma’s diverse terrains. Routine tire rotation helps distribute wear evenly across all tires and keep them in good working condition. Cooling system and battery checks are also essential. You need your engine and electrical systems to work properly. We can help by inspecting these systems and components.

RV awnings are the unsung heroes of road trips. They provide shade, extend your living space, and withstand a fair amount of weather. But when they leak, it can turn your dream vacation into a damp nightmare. This is why understanding how to repair an RV awning effectively is crucial, especially for Tacoma, WA, residents who frequently encounter the region’s notorious and heavy rainfall. This blog will walk you through common awning issues, focusing on leaks and how to tackle them, ensuring your RV remains your home away from home.

Leaks in RV awnings typically originate from three main areas: fabric wear, improper sealing, and mechanical issues. Fabric wear often results from prolonged UV exposure, causing the material to weaken and crack. This is particularly prevalent in older awnings that have been folded and unfolded repeatedly. Improper sealing is another culprit. Over time, the seals at the edges of the awning can deteriorate, leading to water creating rows of damage. Regular inspection of these seals is crucial. If they’re hard or brittle, it’s time to replace them. Mechanical issues, such as bent arms or a faulty roller, can also lead to leaks. These issues cause the fabric to sit unevenly, creating pockets where water can pool and eventually seep. Ensuring the awning mechanism operates smoothly can help reduce these risks. You will prevent even more expensive repairs.

You bought an RV to have “a roof over your head” (as the old saying goes) even when you’re on the go. But did you know that the roof is one of the most vulnerable areas on your RV body? Therefore, keeping the roof in good condition is crucial for protecting our RV investment. Bring your RV to Genesis Automotive in Tacoma, Washington, for routine preventive services to address potential problems or repair existing ones. Don’t let the heavy rainfall in Washington ruin your RV.

One often forgotten problem for your RV’s roof is the dirt and debris that can collect on it. Think of leaves or pine straw landing, settling, and decaying with dampness. In extreme cases, much weight is added to the roof. However, even minor debris collection can destroy the roof over time. Therefore, it’s important to clean your RV roof periodically. But heed a word of caution. While you should clean, you shouldn’t use citrus- or petroleum-based cleaners. Abrasives aren’t a great idea, either. Choose a cleaner made for your particular roofing material and surface. Beyond cleaning, most RV owners may need three basic types of repairs for their roofs. These most frequent repairs are resealing the joints up top, sealing the entire roof, and patching holes or cracking in limited areas. How you do this depends upon the roof’s construction. Repairs may be necessary for fiberglass, aluminum, or rubber surfaces. When you entrust your home on wheels to us, we’ll review the specific application needed. Whether you need only spot repairs (joints, antenna connections, around skylights, and more) or a general roof reboot.

If you own an RV–whether it’s a full-blown motorhome, a travel trailer, or a slide-in for your pick-up–you already know it’s your window to the world. It’s a great way to go almost anywhere while enjoying the comfort and convenience of your own home. (And you can take your pets!) Part of the greatness of this “window,” however, is the integrity of your RV’s windows. Get advice on resealing or replacing RV windows as well as great RV service and repairs at Genesis Automotive & RV Repair in Takoma, Washington.

  Reseal or Replace?

Perhaps you’re wondering if you should reseal or replace that troublesome RV window. If it seems to have just “come loose” around the edges, a reseal may be all you need. This obviously will save you a little time and money if it will truly remedy the problem. Be aware that a reseal is only as good as the quality of workmanship. This should be done using only high-quality materials or a good repair kit. An effective repair should include new foam core material as well as clear drying sealant. The new foam core will alleviate any problems caused by aged, cracking, or disintegrating material. New sealant, of course, will keep moisture out of your portable home’s walls and interiors. Also, the reseal is not a one-person task. You’ll need at least two to remove and reinstall the glass safely. If your unit is older or has sustained damage, you may be better off to go with a new window. After all, you don’t want your view clouded by a dingy or discolored portal, nor do you want to compromise integrity by keeping chipped or cracked glass. That can be a safety hazard! It can also result in replacing the window soon anyway, even though you just resealed it. What a hassle! Therefore, always use sound judgment when deciding whether a reseal or a replacement is in order.

A damaged window or one that has come loose is a big problem in your recreational vehicle, yet it can be easily remedied with a timely repair. A loose window can come out, creating grave danger. Also, it allows water to get down into your walls, possibly causing mold and fostering rot. This could endanger your investment and health! It also leaves an attractive opening for bugs. Yuck! While you may opt to try a reseal yourself if you tend to be handy with such projects, you can always count on the certified technicians at Genesis Automotive & RV Repair. We can reseal your RV windows or even replace them, getting you back out into the world shortly.

Do You Really Have the Whole Truth about Your Diesel?

If you purchased a diesel-powered vehicle, you likely already know its great reputation. But do you know what makes it so different from a gasoline power engine? Have you heard some things that may not be completely accurate? Genesis Automotive & RV Repair in Takoma, Washington, can answer your questions simply and honestly, giving you the knowledge you need to maintain your new vehicle better. When you need service or encounter a problem, we’re here for all your diesel repair needs, as well.

  What Makes Your Diesel Different?

First, let’s take a quick look at what makes your diesel different. In the broadest sense, this kind of engine works the same as a gasoline engine. They’re both considered internal combustion engines. This means that small controlled explosions change fuel into mechanical power that is used to propel the automobile. The difference, however, is how this occurs. The gas combines with air in a gasoline engine before being compressed and ignited in the combustion chamber. In contrast, the air alone is compressed first in a diesel engine. The hot (under extreme compression) air then combines with the diesel fuel for ignition. Therefore, fuel is injected differently depending upon which type of power your vehicle employs. A gasoline engine uses either a carburetor or port injection system, while a diesel sends fuel directly into the cylinder.

  Myths You May Have Heard

A lack of understanding sometimes leads to the spread of misinformation. Such is the case with diesel engines. For example, some drivers have often heard that diesel fuel is difficult to find and expensive. This supply chain conversation is a bit skewed. First, diesel fuel is now a staple at most stations. There are, of course, truck stops with rows of pumps dedicated to large trucks needing to fill up with diesel fuel, but this power source is now available at the majority of gas stations. Second, all fuel is more expensive than drivers would like it to be. While it may cost a little more than gas, fuel efficiency may equalize the expense. Also, drivers who travel at high altitudes may want to take note of the following. While some claim that there’s no difference in engine performance as you move to higher elevations, this simply isn’t true. Diesel engines have turbochargers that make them perform better at high altitudes. Finally, despite rumors, the quality of the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) you choose makes a difference. Purchase a good quality treatment that’s appropriate for your vehicle. Your exhaust will be cleaner (a bonus for the environment), and your engine will perform better (a bonus for you). A Few Important Points in Fleet Operation

Perhaps one of the biggest hurdles to overcome in fleet management is staying organized. It helps to operate using checklists. You need one master list for the fleet as a whole, but you also need another for each auto that’s a part of your fleet. These will help you keep current on the routine maintenance items that need attention. Not only should you address mechanical issues, but you should also outline a plan for your fleet operators. Specifically, make sure you have an user-friendly set of safety protocols that drivers can use throughout their day that covers a variety of situations. Be sure to include what you expect in terms of safe driving habits and responses to emergencies or incidents. Also, develop a plan for reporting mechanical problems. When drivers feel comfortable letting you know about potential issues they’ve observed, you’re in a better position to take care of small problems before they develop into larger ones. Further, consider using technology to aid in remembering which services your vehicles need and when those maintenance points are needed. You can easily develop your own spreadsheet for smaller fleets, but you may want to buy a fleet management software program for a greater number of autos. Be sure the major preventive service needs such as oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, and inspections (safety and emissions where required) form the basis of your fleet checklist. Also, include a column for the odometer reading at each service visit. Finally, talk with us about any needed service adjustments if your fleet vehicles are driven in harsh or extreme conditions.

What Can You Do to Improve Your Fuel Economy?

When you’re ready to get serious about saving money at the pump, the ASE-certified technicians at Genesis Automotive & RV Repair are here to help.

  Every Dollar Counts

Whether you live on a tight budget or feel financially comfortable, every dollar still counts. When you spend more money than you have to on gasoline or diesel fuel, that’s less funding available for other things you might need to do or want to achieve. Reflecting on that reality might leave you wondering if there’s anything you can reasonably do to improve your fuel economy. Simply stated, yes. At Genesis Automotive & RV Repair in Tacoma, Washington, we’ll be glad to give you some tips for saving on fuel expenditures as well as make any repairs necessary to assist you with this endeavor.

  Simple Steps You Can Take

Surprisingly to some motorists, the easiest thing you can do to improve fuel economy is to drive smarter. Specifically, adhere to speed limits, avoid aggressive acceleration, brake sensibly, and don’t carry heavier loads than necessary. (Yes, that means you need to clean the junk out of your automobile periodically!) Also, keep your vehicle well maintained and in good repair. Bringing your car to us for routine preventive maintenance services and inspections will allow us to detect problems early and keep your transportation in prime condition. For instance, regular oil changes keep your engine performing well. That impacts fuel mileage because your auto will use more gas or diesel if the engine is struggling to produce the needed power. Similarly, keeping the air filter clean and/or changed as needed will allow your engine to get the air it needs for efficient combustion. It’s also important to service and clean fuel injectors as needed. Over time, contaminants can clog the injectors. The power plant actually wastes fuel as it struggles to get enough. Worse, severely clogged or damaged injectors may stop working at all, causing your engine to stop working. Finally, you may even consider installing an aftermarket performance kit. An EGR/DFP Delete kit can improve engine performance and horsepower while reducing fuel waste. That’s a win-win situation!

Do you remember the story of the Spanish Armada from a high school history class? If not, here’s the short version. The Armada was a fleet of 130 ships, and their leader believed them to be the mightiest in the world, capable of defeating another country’s navy and accomplishing a political goal. Because each ship as well as leadership wasn’t prepared for the task, the ships were defeated and/or wrecked. What could have been, didn’t turn out as planned. While we hope you aren’t in an undeclared war, we understand that your business’s vehicle fleet is not so different than this group of ships. Your successs, profit, and competitive edge hinge upon your transportation, so keeping your fleet well maintained is a critical component of your business plan. For reliable help with service and repair for your fleet, you can trust the expert technicians at Genesis Automotive & RV Repair in Tacoma, Washington.

A priority for fleet management is organization. Wether you use a self-made pen and paper checklist for a small group of vehicles or available fleet management software to track an enormous number, keeping a checklist will help you ensure that all vehicles are well maintained and safe to be on the road. First, develop protocols and expectations for drivers. Be sure to include instruction on safety expectations, procedures to follow if there’s an accident, and a communication method for reporting suspected mechanical issues. If your drivers are comfortable reporting perceived mechanical problems or warning lights, you are more likely to be able to address small issues before they become major problems. This decreases risk and increases your bottom line. Second, keep your vehicles road ready by performing basic preventive maintenance services regularly. These include tire rotation and balancing, fluid checks, oil changes, etc. It’s best practice to chart these services alongside odometer readings to make sure nothing is missed or overdue. Also, consider the specific uses of your vehicles and the conditions under which they’re driven. This will help you determine if you need to adjust the maintenance schedule.

Diesel 101: How Your Diesel Engine Works

At Genesis Automotive & RV Repair in Tacoma, Washington, we want to earn your trust and your business.

While every type vehicle has some great and desirable features, a diesel powered engine is the first choice for many drivers. In fact, diesels are not only found in the large trucks that traditionally came to mind, but also in some passenger cars, RV’s, boats, tractors, and generators. Manufacturers and owners depend on diesel power for efficient and reliable service as well as longevity. As with any power plant, however, you’ll eventually need service and repair. At Genesis Automotive & RV Repair in Tacoma, Washington, we want to help you understand the workings of your engine and partner with you for all your diesel needs.

  How It Works

Unlike a gasoline engine that compresses a gas and air mixture in the cylinders to create a small explosion, a diesel compresses only air. The air heats to an extremely high temperature as it is compressed, igniting atomized diesel fuel that is injected into the combustion chamber. Because the addition of fuel occurs fairly late in the process, the fuel-air mixture is heterogeneous (unevenly distributed). Therefore, the torque the engine produces is controlled through the amount of fuel that is added rather than the air intake. The air-fuel ratio is typically high. Both two-stroke and four-stroke cycle diesel engines are widely available in a variety of applications, but one can find enormous power plants for special uses that may be as large as 14 cylinders.

  Why It’s a Great Option

Many owners prefer diesels for their longevity. Most will quickly tell you that a diesel engine lasts longer and can be rebuilt, when necessary, to run almost forever. Drivers and operators also like diesels for their efficiency. A diesel powered motor has the highest thermal efficiency of any practical combustion engine. It has a high expansion ratio and a “lean” burn, enabling heat to dissipate through the excess air. In short, you waste less fuel and usually get more for your dollar with a diesel engine. Although other forms of energy (such as electric power) are cleaner alternatives, environmentalists may agree that diesels are less toxic to the environment than gasoline engines because they run more efficiently. Diesel engines produce about 12% more power per gallon of fuel than do gasoline powered motors, so ultimately, a diesel emits less carbon waste for the same nuimber of miles traveled than does a gasoline engine.

What will this winter bring for your vehicle? Will it “win” by surviving unscathed through the winter, or will it fall victim to harsh weather conditions? Before winter arrives, there are some preventive steps auto owners can take to help their vehicles weather the winter well. Some are simple tips that you can take care of yourself, but you may find that you want assistance with others. Whatever your winterization needs, Genesis Automotive & RV Repair in Tacoma, Washington, is here to help.

Getting your car ready for the season is important because you don’t want to become stranded in the bitter cold or have a car crash that might have been avoided. One important step, for instance, is to be sure your battery is up to the challenge. A maintenance-free battery has a small window at the top that allows you to check its condition. Conventional batteries require you to remove the plastic caps on top to check the fluid. If it’s low, add distilled water. You can also have us check your battery for you. If it’s more than five years old or needs more than a simple charge, you should replace it. It’s crucial that you go into winter with a strong battery. When it’s 0 degrees, your battery has only half the cranking amps it has at 80 degrees. Also, for safety’s sake, make sure you can see where you’re driving. Clear windows and windshields of snow and ice before driving, and replace windshield wiper blades regularly to get maximum benefit. Also, make sure your lights are working properly. Finally, don’t forget to make sure your car’s heater is working properly before cold weather sets in.

To get a great start to your camping season in spring, take steps to ensure your RV goes through the winter without damage. Unlike your daily driver, your RV probably won’t be used frequently in winter–unless you’re lucky enough to spend the season in a warm destination. Therefore, you should drain the water from the plumbing system and plug all crevices to prevent rodents from taking up residence. (That doesn’t make for a happy spring opening of the RV!) Disconnecting the batteries will help protect them from the unintended drain some continuous components might cause, and fuel stabilizer additives help keep the fuel from degrading and causing future damage. Also, consider exterior protection. Secured covers for both the tires and the RV body help protect it.

  What’s Different From Gasoline Engines?

While both gasoline and diesel engines are internal combustion engines, there are a few key differences between the two types. Learn how a diesel engine differs from a traditional alternative and find out where you can receive reliable diesel repair services in Tacoma, Washington. Explore the differences to discover the importance of reliable diesel specialists for all your repair and maintenance needs.

  How Diesel Engines Work

A traditional gasoline engine mixes fuel and air, which is then compressed by a piston and ignited by a spark plug spark. Diesel engines compress air, then inject fuel. Because the air is compressed, it heats up enough to ignite the fuel.

This means that there is no spark plug in a diesel vehicle and the entire combustion process relies on compressed, heated air. There are other differing parts as well, so it’s important to work with a mechanic who is experienced with diesel repair services.

  The Four-Stroke Combustion Cycle

How does a diesel engine create combustion? These engines use a four-stroke cycle:

      Intake stroke

      Compression stroke

      Combustion stroke

      Exhaust stroke

The intake stroke opens the valve and allows air to enter the chamber. This also moves the piston down. The compression stroke moves the piston back up to compress the air and heat it up. As it continues to compress the air, it reaches the combustion stroke.

This stroke happens when the piston reaches the top. Fuel is injected in a precisely timed manner, and the heated air causes it to ignite. After combustion, the exhaust stroke pushes the piston back to the top to push out any remaining exhaust after the combustion stroke.

  1. Tape a Garbage Bag to the Empty Space

Before you work on a sturdier temporary window, cover the open space with a garbage bag held on with some strong duct tape. This keeps the elements and any leftover glass outside of your RV so you can keep living inside of it while repairs are being completed.

  2. Buy a Sheet of Plexiglass

To create a temporary window, you will need to start by buying one sheet of plexiglass. You should be able to find one for under $35 at most stores.

  3. Measure Your Window Space

You will need to find the most accurate window measurement possible in order to make a decent replacement. You can find a variety of online resources to help you do so. These numbers can be helpful for the company replacing your window, as well.

  4. Cut Your Glass

The plexiglass will need to be cut to shape in order to fit where the window used to be. You can find do-it-yourself videos online that help you accurately shape and cut your glass. Windows with rounded corners may require extra care and attention.

  Making Your Engine Last Longer

While your diesel engine has many unique features and components compared to a gasoline engine, your diesel vehicle still requires routine and emergency repair services. Don’t forget to keep up with your routine maintenance steps and find out how you can receive reliable diesel repair services in Tacoma, WA.

  Oil Change

A diesel engine still uses oil to lubricate moving parts. Just like any other vehicle, failure to change the oil can damage your engine. Consult your owner’s manual or a local technician to determine the best oil change schedule for your diesel vehicle. If you’re frequently making trips less than 10 miles, you may need to change your oil more regularly. Longer trips with less braking and extreme acceleration can help your vehicle enjoy additional miles in between oil changes.

  Fuel and Air Filter Replacement

Your vehicle uses a filter to ensure your oil system and air intake are free from contaminants and clogs. Fuel filters should be replaced with every oil change to ensure your oil remains clear and free from debris as long as possible. Air filters should be replaced periodically, depending on the type of filter and your driving habits. Air filters can be easy to replace, but consider having a qualified technician inspect both of your filters to ensure they are repaired promptly and adequately to avoid clogging your air intake or oil system.

Unfortunately, your diesel vehicle is still at risk of all the usual major repair costs of a gasoline vehicle. Radiator leaks, transmission issues, and new batteries and belts are all part of owning a diesel vehicle. Consider scheduling routine trips to your local mechanic to keep up on your preventative maintenance and spot the first warning signs that you may need a major repair.

6 Habits For Keeping Your Fleet Operating At 100%

Whether you manage equipment or people, being productive means having good habits that take care of your resources. With these six habits, you can take care of your fleet to protect your investment and keep your drivers safe.

  Be Proactive

Get ahead of potential problems by staying on top of problems. Make sure drivers have hands-free devices. Keep up with maintenance. Install cameras on your fleet to monitor drivers.

  Make Maintenance Easy for Drivers

As a manager, you rely on others to carry out your directives. If you want drivers to keep up with maintenance on their vehicles, then you need to make it accessible and straightforward. You have to provide time for drivers to get their vehicle in for oil changes without harping on them about downtime. You need to make sure they can report problems and get them taken care of. Fleet management software can help ease the pain.

Make Sure Drivers Know Your Expectations

Many problems with fleet vehicles can be prevented when drivers know your performance standards. Incentivize drivers with good habits who maintain their vehicles. Don’t penalize drivers for needing fleet repair. Promote safe driving habits by giving drivers time to make deliveries safely.

  Monitor Data and Measure Performance

Technology gives fleet managers much more information about their vehicles. Track vehicle performance over time. Measure cost per mile and operating costs. Keep up with vehicle maintenance through software.

  Document Everything

In today’s litigious society, you need records. Use digital documentation to manage fleet information to have what you need at your fingertips. Stop using paper files to maintain records. Give drivers access to fleet management software to help them maintain good documents.

Keep Up With Your Industry and Adopt New Procedures

The fleet industry has changed so much over just the past decade that you need to keep up with what is going on. Don’t be afraid to be a leader in using new technology to help you keep up with operations. Many managers are fearful of change. Make educated decisions about using technology to make your fleet more cost-effective by limiting fuel use and taking care of your vehicles.

The Difference Between Auto Repair Shops Dealerships

When To Bring Your Vehicle To Both

Some car owners in Tacoma are under the impression that they need to take their car to the dealership for everything from basic maintenance to extensive repairs. However, this simply isn’t true. Auto repair shops offer many of the same services dealerships do. So, what’s the difference between the two? Here’s a brief overview of how auto repair shops and dealerships differ from each other.

  Dealerships

Dealerships specialize in performing services only on your brand of car. Each month, they work on hundreds of vehicles and typically have a lot of service bays. Their factory-trained technicians only specialize in your brand of car and don’t perform service or maintenance on other brands.

Additionally, they only offer parts that are appropriate for your car brand. When you take your vehicle to the dealership, you’ll interact only with the service advisor and will never see your mechanic. You’ll likely receive a standard checkup and maintenance service unless you came in specifically for a vehicle problem. If your car is still under warranty, most repair costs are covered by the manufacturer. However, once the warranty expires, you’ll need to pay for all the services and repairs as normal. You also have the option of purchasing an extended warranty if you want to, although there is debate about whether an extended warranty provides good value for the money.

  Independent Shops

Independent auto repair shops are not restricted to certain brands. They work on many different brands and know-how to repair a wide variety of problems. They also offer parts for practically every car brand out there. Some of these shops honor third-party warranties as well. When in doubt, ask. Usually, independent shops do not have as many service bays as dealerships and work out of smaller garages. Many of these smaller repair shops were started by former dealership technicians who decided to branch off on their own. Independent shops also tend to offer more personalized services at lower prices than dealerships.

What to Look for in a Mechanic Shop in Tacoma, WA

If you are looking for a trusted mechanic shop in Tacoma, WA, here are a few things to keep in mind.

In a perfect world, every auto shop would be passionate and committed to helping their community of drivers maintain safe and healthy cars with top quality and honest work. Not every auto shop is the same, however, as drivers with years of experience may have learned. If you are looking for a trusted mechanic shop in Tacoma, WA, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  Experienced & Certified Technicians

Look for an auto shop with highly trained ASE Certified technicians capable of working on all makes and models, or even specialists for your specific vehicle type, whether it’s an import car, 4×4, trailer or tractor. If your vehicle needs specific work, such as transmission repair, look for experts in the industry that have the appropriate tools and knowledge to handle the task. Competitive auto shops continually train their technicians to keep up with new technology and industry standards and to better serve their loyal customers.

  Honesty & Fairness

Of course, you want to find an auto shop that excels in customer service, too. A friendly team of trustworthy technicians can make bad news after a breakdown easier with helpful advice and repair options or with conveniences like loaner cars or shuttle services. Even in routine maintenance services, an auto shop should lookout for you and your car first, not for unnecessary problems to create costs. Not all drivers are intrigued about what goes on under the hood to get a car going, that’s why there are auto mechanic experts! A good auto repair shop takes the stress out of car maintenance so you can focus on your own passions.

  Professionalism

From a clean work environment to a friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff, a good mechanic shop upholds professionalism in every aspect of its business. From the moment your car rolls into the shop, its services and your needs should be top priority. The best auto shops are equipped with the advanced technology needed to accurately diagnose and repair any problems, transparently and promptly. You shouldn’t be kept in the dark about what’s going on with your car. Expect a team of professionals to share information and keep you updated on the status and condition of your vehicle.

These 6 tips on general auto maintenance and repair can help you stay ahead of breakdowns and protect your car’s performance.

Attention Tacoma drivers! When was the last time your car visited the auto shop for routine service? Do you know how to tell if your car is having trouble, or when to make certain repairs? Car maintenance doesn’t have to be your area of expertise, after all, you have other things keeping you busy! But most drivers should know what kind of schedule to follow and what signs to look out for to ensure their cars stay in top condition for years to come. These 6 tips on general auto maintenance and repair can help you stay ahead of breakdowns and protect your car’s performance.

Keep up with routine maintenance to avoid costly repairs.

A good driver knows that preventative maintenance is key to avoiding complete breakdowns, the kind that can be a real surprise to you and your wallet. Your car needs regular oil changes and check ups to protect its parts and help it continue to perform perfectly.

Follow manufacturers recommendations for your specific vehicle.

If you aren’t exactly sure when or how often your car needs service, check your manufacturer’s guidelines for your specific vehicle. The owner’s manual typically has recommended schedules and intervals you can follow to sustain your vehicle’s optimal condition.

            Use a trusted mechanic.

A good automotive shop might be all the resources your car needs. Experienced technicians can advise you on ideal service schedules your specific make and model and individual driving habits.

Consider your individual driving needs and habits.

Because while your car might be a popular one, the way you drive it will greatly impact what kind of service it needs and how often.

For the do-it-yourselfer, know your limits.

Some auto services are best left to the professionals. You might be comfortable changing your car’s oil, but some check ups involve electrical and computer components that can be complicated. Especially if you drive a hybrid or newer vehicle, you may want to leave some services to your mechanic that is expertly trained on the ins and outs of tricky systems.

Keep a budget for car maintenance and repairs.

Car maintenance and repairs are part of owning a vehicle and keeping it healthy. Drivers should be prepared to make regular oil changes, check ups, tire rotations, brake replacements, and whatever else their car might need, or risk bigger problems later. An ignored check engine light, tire puncture or other issue can create serious costs. That’s why it’s important to have a budget for your car’s needs whenever they may surface.

RV Maintenance Basics

Help your RV run at its best for more memories to come with 5 basic maintenance jobs you can do yourself.

Your RV is an important investment. It gets your family where they need to go, trip after trip, and is there for all the special memories along the way. For all it does for you and your family, your RV deserves some care and attention. Help your RV run at its best for more memories to come with 5 basic maintenance jobs you can do yourself.

            Keep the Roof Covered

             – There are a number of options available to protect your RV’s vulnerable roof from potential sun and environmental damage. Consider investing in a carport or cover to protect your RV from the elements, or be sure to clean it regularly. The top of an RV is a difficult spot to reach and check for issues, that’s why unprotected roofs often develop severe problems that go unaddressed.

            Check Weather Stripping and Seals

             – You can catch a leak quickly by routinely checked your RV’s window, door and roof seals for damage. We recommend giving them a look over every 6 months or so to ensure excessive moisture isn’t accumulating and causing interior damage.

            Open the Vents

             – Air circulation can keep temperatures inside your RV lower, even during hot summer months. Some owners leave their RV to sit out with the vents closed in the summer heat, when interior temperatures can climb beyond 100 degrees and wear down interior components. But be careful that exterior vents are still blocking water from getting inside!

            Lubricate Slide Out Rails

             – The slide out rails on your RV are susceptible to corrosion over time, making for some serious squeaking. It’s important to keep them lubricated year after year to protect them and prevent damage.

            Run the Generator Regularly

             – A generator that sits without running for a long period of time is susceptible to damage and corrosion. Gasoline needs to flow through the internal components regularly, about once a month for at least 2 hours.

These simple maintenance tips can protect your RV and help it stay in top condition for years of fun to come. Take some time each season to check out some of these important features on your RV.

What to Look For in a Fleet Management Company

When it comes to your company’s vehicles, you need a team you can trust to oversee routine maintenance and repairs.

When it comes to your company’s vehicles, you need a team you can trust to oversee routine maintenance and repairs. A good management company puts your needs first and alleviates the worry and work of maintaining an entire fleet, so you can focus on your business first. Keep these top priorities in mind when looking for your perfect fleet management team:

          Superior Personal Attention

         – You should never have to settle when it comes to your company’s needs. Whoever you choose to manage your fleet vehicles should listen to what you need, providing knowledgeable advice and counsel to help you succeed.

          Speedy Service

         – A good fleet management company like Genesis Automotive & RV Repair understands that your business relies on its fleet vehicles. That’s why you need a dependable team to facilitate timely service for all your vehicles’ needs. Prompt service means less downtime for your company vehicles, helping your business stay punctual and productive.

          Accuracy

         – Misdiagnosis is the enemy of productivity. When problems aren’t accurately identified the first time at the auto shop, everyone’s time is wasted. That’s why you should only trust your fleet to a team of certified and experienced mechanics. A successful fleet management company stays competitive with highly-trained mechanics and the most advanced diagnostic technology to provide expert service and repairs the first time.

          Easy Scheduling

Keep good tires on your vehicle.

Having properly inflated tires with good tread is vital. Tires that are worn-out or underinflated are wasteful, requiring more gas to propel them forward.

        Replace your air filter.

Many people don’t realize that their car’s air filter is directly related to its gas consumption, but an air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs can reduce your gas mileage by up to 10%!

A bad spark plug reduces your car’s fuel efficiency by up to 30%!

Make sure you get your oil changed. Having old or dirty motor oil running through your engine makes your engine work harder. And the harder you engine works, the more gas you burn.

        Get an engine tune-up.

An engine tune-up is a great auto repair service in Tacoma as it increases your car’s overall fuel efficiency and keeps your engine running better, longer.

Auto Repair Tacoma WA – Winter Driving Tips

When the temperatures lower, you’ll want your car to be in the best shape possible. A quick visit to a repair expert will give you the right kind of fluids and ensure no problems occur during the winter.

Located roughly 32 miles northwest of Olympia, Tacoma is a port city in Washington with a population of just under 200,000 people. The region is known as being one of the most livable areas in the country, and Tacoma is often included on various ‘best-of’ lists. However, like many northwestern cities, it also feels the sting of winter. Average lows are around the mid-thirties for most of the winter, and freezing rain or snow is a common occurrence. Driving in an unsafe manner can often lead to accidents and other

issues, and learning how to safely drive during the colder months is important for anyone in the area.

There are a few things to remember about driving in the winter, and the first is nothing more important than tires. Many auto repair shops will be able to outfit your vehicle with a good set of tires, and it’s important that you take the time and money needed to invest in tires with good tread seriously. Also, if there is an excessive amount of snow or ice on the road, it’s a good idea to reduce tire pressure to a level slightly lower than the recommend levels. This increases the amount of surface area touching the road and provides better traction.

Speed kills during bad weather, and simply slowing down on the road will reduce the chance of accidents and other issues. Leave out earlier than you normally would and take your time during your drive. Remember to monitor outside temperatures. When they dip below freezing, any dark spot on the road could be ice. This ‘black ice’ may look like a puddle of water, but is the cause of many accidents each year.

Another point to consider is for your car’s overall health and your own comfort. Crank your car and let it run for a few minutes prior to using it. Letting it ‘warm up’ will ensure that your fluids reach a good operating temperature, reduces the chance of serious problems, and will give you a warm interior to drive in.

Finally, complete your maintenance as directed each year. When the temperatures lower, you’ll want your car to be in the best shape possible. A quick visit to a repair expert will give you the right kind of fluids and ensure no problems occur during the winter.

Name That Automotive Fluid!

So stop into our shop, located in Tacoma, Washington, and schedule an appointment to have your vehicle checked out.

It’s not uncommon to see fluid leaking from your vehicle, especially as it gets older. Whether it’s a cause for concern or not however, depends on identifying the leaking fluid. I can’t tell you how many times customers have come to Genesis Auto & RV Repair Inc., thinking their vehicle is leaking coolant (for instance), only to find out it is transmission fluid.

A leak could mean that fluids simply need to be topped off or that a repair needs to be made so that you don’t get stranded on Tacoma’s busy roads. How soon you need to repair a leak depends on what fluid is leaking, how much is leaking and what the fluid is leaking onto.

Here is a guide to help you identify what fluid may be dripping onto your garage floor:

Bright Green Fluid – is normally radiator coolant, it smells semi-sweet and is slippery to the touch (coolant can also be pink or red in color).

Bright Blue Fluid – is usually windshield washer fluid (can also be orange, pink or yellow).

Light Brown Fluid– if there is a strong odor that smells like rotten eggs, the fluid can be 90 weight oil or gear lube. This fluid is used in axle housings and differentials.

Red Fluid – automatic transmission fluid and power steering fluid often share the same type of fluid; this fluid has a lighter feeling than engine oil. Other red color fluid can also be long-life coolant for the radiator or water pump.

Clear Fluid – can be power steering fluid or water. Power steering fluid is a type of oil and will feel very slippery. Water commonly drains from the air conditioning condenser unit.

Light Yellow Fluid – new brake fluid is yellow in color and turns a muddy brown color as it ages and absorbs water.

Amber Fluid – can be gasoline. You should notice the distinct odor of gasoline before you see fluid on the ground. Even a small leak under the car will typically produce strong fumes.

Sometimes it can be tricky identifying the fluid. In that case, Genesis Auto & RV Repair Inc., is here to help! We’d rather see you in our shop for an inspection, than continuing to drive with a serious leak. So stop into our shop, located in Tacoma, Washington, and schedule an appointment to have your vehicle checked out.
